Growing up with the name Xerxes means that none of the other kids had ever really heard that name before except if they had read Edward Gorey’s The Gashlycrumb Tinies (or perhaps Herodotus’ Histories but I don’t think I’d want to hang out with that kid).
Anyway, happy birthday to the man that perfectly captured my cowardly cower.
Please enjoy this reading of the holiday classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas as read by the always awesome Big Boi of OutKast fame. Hopefully this means that a new mash-up album is on its way. (Fingers crossed.)
I’ve never been one to hide my affinity for Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You and then Jimmy Fallon and The Roots had to go and record a version with her and a ukulele and a xylophone (among other “kiddie” instruments). If you dig deep into the history of Xerxes Cortez, you’ll find that one of the first performance-type deals I ever did was in a duo called The Dubs where we played covers of pop songs on a ukulele and a xylophone so this video has now become my definitive version of this song. Enjoy!
P.S. If you’ve ever wanted to distill the lyrics of this song down to one sentence that is totally devoid of any emotion, look no further than Wikipedia. Take it away, guys.
Its lyrics declare that the singer does not care about Christmas presents or lights; all she wants for Christmas is to spend time with her lover.
If you sing that sentence while listening to the backing track of Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what Christmas songs will sound like in a future of robotic overlords. Damn you, SkyNet!!!
